- Between 2 and 10 players sit at a table, starting with a random player who will be declared the “dealer” and get a button that notes them as such.
- The two players to the left of the dealer button are forced to bet before the hand begins. The player to the immediate left of the dealer is known as the “Small Blind” and the player to their left is known as the “Big Blind”. The blind bets give the rest of the players something to play for, and the amount of the required blinds increases throughout the tournament.
- Each player is dealt 2 cards. The dealer distributes them 1 card at a time going in order from the left of the button player. These 2 cards are known as “Hole Cards”. You must look at them carefully, so only you know what they are.
- There are up to 4 rounds of betting. The first round begins with the player to the left of the big blind. They will have the option to match (call) the big blind , get rid of their hand by passing it to the person who dealt cards to each player (also known as folding), or increase the bet (raise). The minimum amount of a raise is equal to the big blind, but may include all of a player’s chips (known as All-in).
- Moving around the table going clockwise, each player will have the option to either “check" (pass) if there is no bet in front of them, fold their hand if there is a bet, call the bet, or raise the largest current bet. To raise the bet, the player must increase the bet by at least the amount of the previous raise, or if they do not have enough chips, they may go All-in.
- After each player has acted, if there are 2 or more players remaining who are not all-in, there will be a 2nd round of betting.
- Once everyone has acted, if there are at least 2 active players who are not All-in, 3 community cards (known as “the flop”) are dealt into the center of the table. These community cards are ones that each player uses to make the best possible 5 card poker hand. Another round of betting starts after the flop, beginning with the player to the left of the dealer button, and proceeding to each player to their left.
- Once that round concludes, if there are still 2 or more active players, a 4th community card (called “the turn”) is dealt, and bets are once again open to each active player, beginning with the player to the left of the dealer button.
- Once that round is over, assuming there are at least 2 or more active players remaining, a 5th community card (also known as “the river"), will be dealt, and players will have another opportunity to place bets. Once that round is over, all players remaining reveal their hole cards, and the best 5 card poker hand wins all the chips in the pot.
-To begin the next hand, the dealer button, small blind, and big blind positions all move in a clockwise direction one seat to the left, and the entire process is repeated.
